At the Home Lab, we test and develop smart systems that automatically match electricity consumption in homes to the supply from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.

Here, we investigate how household appliances, smart meters, energy management systems and control algorithms can work together to make the electricity grid more stable, efficient and flexible.

What is the purpose of the Home Lab?

  • Testing products and services that are essential for the roll-out of smart grids, such as home energy management systems, residential demand response technologies and home communication technologies.  
  • Experiments with various types of smart meters, energy management systems, smart sockets and smart appliances (such as advanced smart washing machines, dishwashers, tumble dryers, air conditioners and domestic hot water storage tanks).  
  • Measuring and calculating the impact of optimisation algorithms on consumption, efficiency and grid load.    
  • Testing which battery technology works best with the technology and equipment in the Home Lab (such as the energy management systems) by connecting various battery packs.
