Energy Strategies and Markets
At EnergyVille, we research the economic, technological and behavioural aspects of today’s and tomorrow’s energy system. We monitor energy supply and demand, carry out evaluations, and provide advice on energy efficiency, renewable energy and flexibility. Our work supports companies as well as local, regional and European policymakers.
Long-Term Energy System Planning
Our long-term energy system models are based on the TIMES modelling framework. These models help policymakers and businesses identify cost-efficient pathways towards a future energy system based on renewable energy sources. They take climate targets and energy policy objectives into account.
Energy Market Simulation
We also develop simulation models that replicate the operation of European energy and flexibility markets. These models help market participants (private, DSO, TSO, …) understand how changes in market design affect traded volumes and market prices.
Scenario and modelling work
PATHS2050 is EnergyVille’s scenario and modelling work on how Belgium can become climate-neutral by 2050 without losing sight
of economic resilience. Since 2022, more than 200 researchers have worked on datadriven scenarios for the Belgian energy system. EnergyVille/VITO joined forces with 9 leading industrial and energy companies in the PATHS2050 Coalition: ArcelorMittal, BASF, Elia, Engie, Fluxys, Holcim, Luminus, Otary and SCK CEN. The coalition shares ideas and know-how to jointly evaluate possible transition pathways. Read more about PATHS2050
