Bringing the right minds together to accelerate the energy transition.

Ready to be part of the journey? Discover who we are.

EnergyVille is a unique environment where people from different backgrounds, with different areas of expertise and career paths, work together to tackle the same challenge. Meet these 4 researchers who found their way to Limburg and are helping to shape the story of the energy transition.

Gizem Birant

Gizem is a researcher at EnergyVille/UHasselt, where she works on thin-film and tandem solar cells. Her career began in Turkey, where she studied physics and gained her first research experience. However, she wanted to step out of her comfort zone and work in a more international setting. Through a European project, she ended up in Limburg in 2018.

The biggest perk of working at EnergyVille?

Working at Thor Park, where new energy technology is being developed on a historic mining site.

Amauri Martins Britto

Amauri is studying the behaviour of underground power cables at EnergyVille/KU Leuven/Etch. As lead developer of LineCableModels.jl, he is building computer tools to simulate complex scenarios, ranging from short circuits and lightning strikes to faults that can propagate through a network via cables.

Why is his research so interesting?

It combines mathematics and physics, but also touches on performance, reliability and safety.

Yami Chuang

At imec, Yami is a programme manager; at EnergyVille, she helps to coordinate the Power-to-Molecules research line. She works at the interface between materials, electrochemistry and system integration to convert CO₂ into carbon-based molecules using renewable energy.

What makes EnergyVille unique?

The combination of complementary expertise, long-standing collaborative experience and an ecosystem that is firmly rooted in practice.

Guillermo Borragán Pedraz

Guillermo’s focus is on the consumer. Why do people make decisions? What persuades them to renovate, save energy or embrace a new approach? How can policy respond to this more effectively? He studies social influence, habits and the motivation to invest in sustainable technology.

Why did Guillermo choose EnergyVille?

Because here he is given the freedom to explore issues in depth and is in close contact with policymakers and civil society.
