Open Thor Build | Two Identical Lab Houses

These two identical lab houses form part of Open Thor Build. They provide a realistic testing environment for innovation in the residential construction sector.

Here, companies and researchers test, validate and demonstrate solutions for:

  • Building envelope (new builds and renovations)  
  • Indoor air quality  
  • HVAC systems  
  • Energy systems and energy management  

Because the houses are built identically — with the same layout, orientation, sunlight exposure and shading — accurate A/B testing is possible. An extensive network of sensors and controllable components makes it possible to measure the effect of a single modified parameter immediately and reliably.  

The setup is flexible: virtual occupants simulate real-world usage (heat, humidity, CO₂), and windows, doors, screens, HVAC and showers are fully controllable to simulate occupancy. The building envelope is modular: facades and roof structures can be easily replaced.  

The homes are connected to the 5th generation CollecThor thermal network (heating and cooling). The basements provide space for alternative energy generation systems, which can be easily connected to the free connection points on the collectors.
