EnergyVille is more than a research centre. It is a powerful innovation ecosystem where knowledge institutions, governments and regional partners combine their expertise to accelerate the energy transition. At its core are four complementary research partners: KU Leuven, VITO, imec and UHasselt. Together, they form a unique collaboration that connects fundamental research with technological innovation and real-world applications.
Four partners, complementary expertise
Each partner contributes its own unique strengths. KU Leuven offers in-depth expertise in power electronics, smart electricity grids, building physics and energy conversion. VITO develops innovative solutions for energy systems, buildings, thermal technologies, energy storage and energy markets. imec is a global leader in photovoltaic research and advanced battery and power electronics technologies. UHasselt contributes expertise in materials research, photovoltaic systems, batteries, green hydrogen and sustainability assessment.
A strong network for innovation
EnergyVille works with an extensive network of governments, companies and organisations to bring innovation to real-world applications faster. In addition to its four founding partners, the Flemish Government, the Province of Limburg, the City of Genk, LRM, POM Limburg and Nuhma are key partners. Companies, industry organisations and knowledge institutions also contribute to projects that address the challenges of the energy transition.
This collaboration takes shape through a range of concrete initiatives. At the Open Thor Living Lab, new technologies are tested in real homes, buildings and energy networks. Companies work alongside researchers to develop and demonstrate innovative solutions before they are deployed on a larger scale. EnergyVille also brings together businesses through workshops, demonstration projects and networking events, while collaborating on joint research projects in areas such as solar energy, building renovation and smart electricity grids.
