Orion Grid Technologies gives grid operators a clearer view
Incomplete and outdated plans mean that grid operators do not always have an accurate picture of their underground distribution networks. This makes it harder to locate faults, plan investments effectively and prepare the grid for new applications. Over the years, electricity grids in residential areas have expanded step by step. Even in the past, those networks were not always fully or correctly documented. With the rapid uptake of electric vehicles, heat pumps and solar panels, that is becoming a much bigger issue. Without a clear picture of cables, connections and network topology, it becomes increasingly difficult to detect congestion, plan investments and prevent disruptions.

Award-winning research
In 2025, two PhD researchers, jointly supervised by KU Leuven and VITO, received the Gemma Frisius Award for their work on system identification in low-voltage grids. Hélène Ponsaerts (EnergyVille/VITO) and Mohamed Numair (EnergyVille/KU Leuven) contributed to the knowledge base on which Orion Grid Technologies continues to build.
€1 million to support further growth
In February 2026, Orion Grid Technologies announced that it had raised €1 million in seed funding. The investment will help the spin-off further develop its software and deploy it more widely with distribution system operators. It is also a strong signal that the market sees real potential in the technology.
