DC nanogrids

DC nanogrids are attracting growing interest. Alternating current (AC) technology has long been the standard for electricity distribution in buildings and districts. The energy transition, the rise of decentralised energy generation, and the increasing electrification of heating and transport are raising new questions about the suitability of traditional AC-based systems.

Exploring Low-Voltage DC Technology 

At EnergyVille, we actively investigate the potential of low-voltage direct current (LVDC) technology for future energy systems. A key aspect of this research is ensuring that safety remains a central consideration in the design and operation of DC networks. 

A Unique Testing Environment 

To support this research, we have established a 750 V / 100 kW bipolar DC nanogrid within our Home Lab. This building-level nanogrid, which is distinct from wide-area microgrids, provides a flexible and reconfigurable environment for testing DC components and systems. The facility is unique in Flanders and enables the validation of innovative DC technologies under realistic operating conditions. 

Focus on Protection and Control 

Our current research focuses on developing robust protection mechanisms and effective management strategies for DC nanogrids. The goal is to ensure stable, safe and flexible operation across a wide range of applications and operating environments, supporting the transition towards future DC-based energy systems.
