Smart Cities Marketplace

ProjectBuildings & districts

The Smart Cities Marketplace aims to bring cities, industries, SMEs, investors, researchers and other smart city actors together. By exploring existing solutions and transferring knowledge, shaping project ideas and bringing project proposals to investors to enhance deals, the goal is to increase the competitiveness of European cities and industry, reach European energy and climate targets, and improve citizen’s quality of life.

About Smart Cities Marketplace

The building sector plays an important role in reaching the European climate goals, not only at building level, but also at city level. The Smart Cities Marketplace is the result of merging the Smart Cities Information System (SCIS) and the Marketplace of the European Innovation Partnership on Smart Cities and Communities (EIP-SCC). It is intended to enhance the uptake of Smart City solutions. The Explore-Shape-Deal funnel is the backbone of this project.

The first phase of the funnel is ‘Explore’. Many lessons learned can be derived from existing Smart City projects, not only the success stories, but also the failures. By looking into what went well and what went wrong a lot of useful knowledge can be gathered to replicate specific solutions. The Solutions Booklets, created in SCIS, are a good example of knowledge gathered in the ‘Explore’ phase.

Since every city is unique, successful projects can’t be simply duplicated to other cities, but knowledge from the ‘Explore’ phase might plant a seed for project ideas. To be able to bring these project ideas to viable proposals in which investors are interested, a ‘Shape’ phase is in place. For example during Matchmaking events, or Masterclasses, we work together to convert these project ideas into strong proposal, and increasing their project maturity level. For this, close collaboration with the Action Clusters and Initiatives is in place.

The last phase is the ‘Deal’ phase, where mature projects are coupled with interested parties from the investor network. By enhancing deals for new Smart City projects, the project thus contributes to reaching the EU energy and climate goals, increase the competitiveness of European cities and industry and improve citizen’s quality of life.

EnergyVille / VITO's role in Smart Cities Marketplace
