FLEXCON 2024

EventEvenement

FLEXCON is an international conference that brings together parties from around the world to discuss energy flexibility. This three-day meeting focuses on the future of our energy system, moving from demand-driven to supply-driven energy consumption. This means, for example, turning on your washing machine when the sun shines or charging your battery when the wind blows.

We are enthusiastically participating in this conference to contribute to discussions, workshops and networking events on the complex transition to a smarter, more sustainable energy grid. FLEXCON offers a unique opportunity to exchange ideas, discover new developments and work together on the future of energy.

Towards integrated and coordinated markets: challenges and opportunities

The need for flexibility in energy and electricity markets is growing rapidly. The system increasingly requires flexibility from various sources, connected at different voltage levels and with different flexibility profiles. Grid operators are developing new services that seek to exploit this flexibility, from long-term planning to real-time operations. However, the emergence of these innovative services and applications in Europe creates the risk of fragmented markets with low liquidity and potential manipulation risks.

Harmonisation is crucial, but how do you achieve European alignment without losing sight of the unique needs of the end consumer? Moreover, the complexity for system operators to use flexibility from different locations for different purposes is increasing.

Helena Gerard, senior researcher at EnergyVille/VITO, brings extensive expertise to this discussion. After studying Commercial Engineering and Financial Economics at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Helena worked at ENGIE from 2008 to 2014, where she focused on renewable energy and portfolio management. Since 2014, she has worked at EnergyVille, where she is responsible for developing the energy market design roadmap. Helena currently leads the work on market design in the European projects EU-Sysflex and OneNet and chairs the BRIDGE working group on regulation and the Flemish working group on flexibility. She also coordinates the Belgian-funded project ALEXANDER, which focuses on accelerating flexibility in the low-voltage grid.

On Thursday 26 September, Helena Gerard will share valuable insights from leading EU and Belgian projects on the main challenges and possible solutions for creating integrated and coordinated markets.
