Local authorities have a pivotal role in making heating and cooling more sustainable but need support to take action

News15-12-2016

The STRATEGO project has ended in November 2016, after supporting multiple national and local authorities in drafting action plans on heating and cooling. EnergyVille (VITO) was responsible for the support to the local authorities.

In total 30 cities from eight different EU Member States, varying in size (from small villages to metropoles) and with or without a district heating grid were supported. EnergyVille has elaborated five of these cases:

  • Antwerp
  • Kortrijk
  • Dessel / Mol
  • The province of Limburg
  • Veurne

EnergyVille has come to the conclusion that the local authorities have a pivotal role in making heating and cooling more sustainable. But the cases also show that the local authorities need support in drafting heating and cooling action plans. They need among others support in mapping heating and cooling, which is the basis for local action plans, and in developing projects. In response to this EnergyVille is participating in the PLANHEAT project; this project aims at building an integrated tool for empowering public authorities in the development of sustainable plans for low carbon heating and cooling.
