Etch webinar: AC Faults in Converter-Dominated Power Systems: What TSOs, Vendors, and Engineers Need to See

EventWebinar

In this Etch webinar, Xiaoxiao Liu will share how sensitivity analysis can be used to better understand AC fault behavior in converter-dominated systems. The goal isn’t just to show what happens during a fault, but to explore which parameters truly matter—and how that depends on the role you’re working in, whether you’re a TSO, vendor, protection engineer, or control designer.

Rather than looking at the system from a single angle, the presentation takes a broader perspective. It asks how we can apply system-level thinking to bridge the gap between different stakeholders, improve model transparency, and make smarter design and protection decisions.

Through a few practical examples, Xiaoxiao will highlight why this matters now—and how we can all gain a clearer picture of fault dynamics in today’s evolving power grids.

About the speaker

Xiaoxiao Liu is a PhD researcher at KU Leuven and the University of Edinburgh, focusing on the interaction between converter control, AC fault behavior, and protection coordination in modern power systems. Her work aims to bring clarity to the challenges that arise in converter-dominated grids, especially with regard to fault dynamics and grid code compliance.

She uses sensitivity analysis to better understand how different control parameters affect system behavior during faults, and how that knowledge can support the work of TSOs, vendors, and engineers making real-world decisions.
