Heat waves vs. Brain waves: EnergyVille Summer School 2025 wraps up after hot and inspiring days

News03-07-2025

After three days of talks and discussions, our very first international summer school has officially ended. From 30 June to 2 July, early-career researchers from EnergyVille and beyond, gathered in Genk to dive into the latest developments in sustainable energy – all while enduring the intense heat outside.

Highlights of the program

This year’s edition focused on how we design smarter and cleaner energy systems for the future. Topics ranged from solar technology and battery storage to energy modeling and the electrification of buildings and cities. The program struck a balance between academic insights and real-world applications. Participants attended expert-led lectures, exchanged ideas during a poster session and got an inside look at the EnergyVille’s high tech labs.

One of the highlights was the keynote by Jonas Schroyens (KBC) on finance. He demonstrated how financial institutions can help accelerate the energy transition, even in times of economic uncertainty. Maarten De Groote (VITO) additionally delivered a keynote on the importance of effective policy in enabling systemic change. He emphasized how crucial good regulations and governance are for a low-carbon built environment.

Strong networks, stronger impact

The summer school offered plenty of chances to meet new people, proving that strong networks truly lead to a stronger impact. EnergyVille colleagues got to know each other better, while the international guests mingled easily with everyone. Whether at the busy poster session or the relaxed mocktail workshop, there was lots of time to share ideas across different backgrounds.

A big thank you to everyone who attended or gave a powerfull lecture, to and help make it such a great few days!
