Researcher Jef Beerten nominated for the New Scientist Science Talent award

The science magazine New Scientist will for the third time award a prize this year for the largest scientific talent of the Netherlands and Flanders: the New Scientist Science Talent 2017. This award was launched last year to bring groundbreaking research by young scientists from Belgium and the Netherlands to the attention of a wide audience.

Colleague Jef Beerten has been nominated for this award for his groundbreaking research into the electricity grid. Last year, he received the prestigious ABB award for this. His research focuses on a supergrid, a European highway for electricity that allows large volumes of renewable energy to be transported across national borders. In earlier research, Jef Beerten developed solutions to the technical problems that such a supergrid will encounter. At this moment he is diving deeper in the current grid. Beerten examines how models of the existing grid can be improved so that we can better pinpoint and solve problems and ultimately realize a highway for electricity.

On June 22, the winner will be announced during New Scientist Live: Nobel Prize. The vote of the audience determines 50% of the final result, so every vote counts! Please vote here
