Indian Officials visit VITO/EnergyVille on a study tour under the EU-India Clean Energy & Climate Partnership

11-04-2018

On 10 April, EnergyVille welcomed a delegation of Indian officials for a study visit in the framework of the EU-India Clean Energy and Climate Partnership.

Back in 2016, the EU and the Indian government signed a Joint Declaration to work together on topics related to energy and climate change, and that is how the EU-India Clean Energy & Climate Partnership was born. From then on, both the EU and India have engaged in mutual cooperation through a large array of initiatives that seek to support India’s pathway into low carbon energy production and climate change mitigation.

Under this partnership and invited by the European Commission, a delegation of 13 Indian officials from the Ministry of Environment Forest and Climate Change, the Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation and different state representatives are currently in a study tour in Belgium and Denmark.

While in Belgium, VITO/EnergyVille in coordination with Adelphi and the Belgian Embassy in New Delhi, hosted the delegation for a morning of interesting presentations, a tour around EnergyVille’s labs and a networking lunch at the Thor Central building (April 10th, 2018). The visit started with a presentation given by Bruno Reyntjens, Commercial Director of VITO, about EnergyVille’s history and mission, plus a brief overview of VITO’s ongoing activities in India, such as the EU Desk of Centre for Ganga River Basin Management and Studies and Andicos™: combined waste and waste water treatment (IE and Europem at Infosys).

With cooperation in clean energy technology being one of the main interests within the partnership, our experts presented VITO/EnergyVille state-of-the-art technology developments in Green Cooling and Electrical storage. These presentations were followed by an interactive tour to our Battery Testing and Thermo Technical Labs, where the delegation witnessed our research in practice.

Another relevant topic on the partnership’s agenda is EU climate change policies at the national and local level. Having this in mind, our experts showcased the results and lessons learned from our modelling projects in long term energy scenario analysis for Belgium – Energy Transition in Belgium. Choices and Costs - plus our tools for energy planning in cities and tailor-made renovation advice for home owners & tenants aiming to unlock their energy savings potential.

As the delegation will continue their study tour to Denmark, where they will visit the European Environment Agency (EEA), our experts presented the activities in the areas of climate change mitigation and GHG & ODS emissions that VITO/EnergyVille performs as a partner of the European Topic Centre on Air Pollution and Climate Change Mitigation, in order to assist the EEA, and its thematic and cross-cutting assessments, to report on the progress of EU Environmental policy and to support the harmonisation of European monitoring networks and reporting obligations.

Certainly, this was a very rewarding visit for all. Apart from the insightful presentations, the delegation felt particularly inspired by EnergyVille’s location, which in the past was the site of a coal mine and now hosts a ‘centre of excellence’ on sustainable energy. For us, it was very rewarding to participate in what we believe is a very fruitful collaboration between the EU and India.
